During his time, Ki Hajar Dewantara proposed that education should be available for everyone, regardless of their race, sex, religion, economic status, etc. He strongly believe that education had to be based on the universal values of freedom and the rights to seek knowledge. He was also famous for the saying: Ing ngarso sung tulodo, ing madyo mangun karso, tut wuri handayani. It translates to “(those) in front should set an example, (those) in the middle should raise the spirit, and (those) behind should give encouragement”.
